Rotary Die Cutting

General Information: Can-Do National Tape fabricates adhesive backed materials into predefined shapes and sizes by the die cutting process. There are several different die cutting processes.

In addition to rotary die cutting, adhesive backed materials are die cut using flatbed steel rule dies. The best die cutting method depends on such factors as the material being die cut, the number of pieces needed and the required tolerances.

Rotary die cutting is most effective when large numbers of parts are needed and when the tolerances are very rigid.
Rotary dies are primarily used to cut material from a web (continuous roll), although Can-Do National Tape does use large rotary steel rule dies to cut large pieces from material in sheet form.
Rotary die cutting involves cutting material between the blades on a cylindrical die and an anvil, which is a smooth hard cylinder. The depth of the cut can be controlled precisely between the anvil and the die, which makes it ideal for “kiss” cutting and results in long life and clean cuts.

Presses: Rotary die presses allow for consistent accuracy and high speed converting of various substrates. Rotary die presses can be set up to die cut and kiss cut, while laminating, scoring and sheeting in line. The web width of the rotary die press may determine the width of the material being used, the size of the rolls and how many processes may be designed into the fabrication process. So, the fabrication process and the rotary die cutting of parts entail detailed preparation and engineering.

Materials: Many different materials can be processed by Can-Do National Tape’s rotary die cutting services for a wide variety of applications. Materials include felt, fabrics, fiber, paper, metals and alloys, plastics, rubber, foams, composites, electrical insulating materials, EMI/RFI shielded foils, and laminates. Examples of products manufactured by Can-Do National Tape’s die cutting processes are automotive heat shields and sound dampening foam parts for the appliance industry.
