Tape Slitting

foam tape slitting Can-Do offers "slit to width" capabilities for customers seeking custom width rolls of pressure sensitive adhesive tapes. We can convert your adhesive tape into rolls that meet your customized requirements.

Can-Do has several pieces of equipment that slit rolls to custom width. Material may be razor cut, crush cut, or baloney slit. In the baloney slitting process, the blade may or may not be rotating, depending on the material to be cut. Also, the blade may require a water-cooling substance during the slitting process to reduce heat. A single operator runs this machine; and once a cut is made, the machine traverses down the log to make another cut.

  • Razor cut slitting is a process that uses single blades. Material is pulled through the stationary blades, making precise cuts.

  • Crush cut or score slitting is a process whereby circular knives are pressed against a steel cylinder or mandrel with material being pulled through, between the knives and the mandrel. Score cutting is more appropriate for materials of uneven thickness while razor slitting is best suited for films and thinner materials with consistent thickness.

The logs of tape may vary in length, so you are able to design the most appropriate length and width for your application needs. Rolls of tape may be slit to as narrow as 1/8" inch width, up to 60" width. Tolerances are typically 1/32" but may vary depending on the material being slit.

Slitting Application Success Stories

Drop ceilings
One of our customers uses vinyl tape to cover the metal strips that hold drop-ceiling tiles in place. These strips are covered with black, gray, or white vinyl tape, and match the color of the ceiling tiles. The strips vary in width, so the tape must be cut to various widths. Can-Do slits rolls of these different colored vinyl tapes to 1-7/8", 2 -1/8", and 2- 3/8". Also, while vinyl log rolls are typically produced in 36-yard length, this material is "put-up" in 60-yard lengths. So, the customer is able to apply the appropriate width material to the metal strips, with minimum changeover time.
