Tape Slitting
Can-Do has the capability to slit various flexible materials and pressure sensitive adhesives to customized widths using several different methods and pieces of equipment.
Lathe Slitting
Can-Do offers "slit to width" capabilities for customers seeking custom width rolls of pressure sensitive adhesive tapes as well as many other types of material. Lathe Slitting is the process of taking logs of pressure sensitive material and spinning them at high speed on a stationary mandrel while a circular blade cuts the material to the specified width. Can-Do has state of the art lathe slitters with numerically controlled indexing to ensure that our quality standards and customer specifications are met. The various types of materials we cut vary in both width and length. Lathe slitting gives us the flexibility to customize a solution that makes the best use of the material and provide the best solution for our customers.
Rewind Slitting
Rewind slitting gives Can-Do tight tolerance slitting capability and the flexibility to vary the width of material as well as the length. We operate several different rewind slitting machines and use the Score, Shear, or Razor methods for slitting our materials. Score, Shear, and Razor slitting each have attributes that make it suitable for certain types of materials. Score, shear, and razor are typical rewind slitting methods and is completely dependent upon the material being slit.
Razor cut slitting is a process that uses single razor blades. Material is pulled through the stationary blades, making precise clean cuts. Razor slitting is best suited for films and thinner materials with consistent thickness.
Score slitting is a process where circular knives are pressed against a steel cylinder or mandrel with material being pulled through, between the knives and the mandrel. Score cutting is more appropriate for materials of uneven thickness.
Shear Slitting uses two rotary knives to produce the same cutting effect as obtained by using a pair of scissors. The material is cut at the junction of the two sharp edges and is ideal for paper, foil, and heavier gauge materials.
Slitting Application Success Stories
Drop ceilings
One of our customers uses vinyl tape to cover the metal strips that hold drop-ceiling tiles in place. These strips are covered with black, gray, or white vinyl tape, and match the color of the ceiling tiles. The strips vary in width, so the tape must be cut to various widths. Can-Do slits rolls of these different colored vinyl tapes to 1-7/8", 2 -1/8", and 2- 3/8". Also, while vinyl log rolls are typically produced in 36-yard length, this material is "put-up" in 60-yard lengths. So, the customer is able to apply the appropriate width material to the metal strips, with minimum changeover time.
Quick turnaround saves the show
Problem: The tour bus was leaving at noon; and at 9 a.m., they realized that someone had forgotten to order the gaffers tape that was to be used to tape down wire cables to the stage floor.
Solution: The customer called Can-Do, and we were able to slit multiple rolls and various colors of gaffers tape to several different widths and have them ready for delivery within the hour.
Helping customers when they need us most
One of Can-Do's largest suppliers requested we assist them at a time when they were running at full capacity and unable to deliver product to another one of their customers. We agreed to help and then received multiple jumbo rolls of duct tape on a daily basis. We were able to rewind/slit the material to 2" width and custom length for the customer.
We produced thousands of these rolls and were also able to custom package and shrink-wrap each roll to the specifications of the customer. In this case, we were paid a fee for each roll produced, never taking ownership of the material.
Keeping product in stock for customers
Can-Do serves as a stocking distributor for another highly regarded manufacturer of adhesive products. In this capacity, we maintain inventory of a variety of the company's products in jumbo roll form. We also service customers for these products and provide short lead times for custom cut rolls and small quantities of this material.
